Abstract

Abstract

The church plays a vital role in nurturing the spiritual and social life of its congregation through responsible financial management that supports worship, education, and social activities. To generate funds for its ministry, GKE Palangka 1 has adopted the practice of selling raffle tickets. This study aims to explore the social and ethical dynamics of this practice, including congregants’ perceptions, the meanings they attribute to it, and its theological implications. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through interviews with one pastor, four members of the raffle organizing committee, and eight congregants; observations of ticket sales and prize-drawing activities; and an analysis of official GKE documents. The data were analyzed thematically through repeated reading, coding, theme development, and the interpretation of socio-theological meanings. The trustworthiness of the findings was established through source and method triangulation. The findings reveal that the practice serves a dual function: as an economic strategy for increasing congregational funds and as a social medium that strengthens collective solidarity. Some congregants perceive it as an expression of voluntary participation and communal support, whereas others regard it as a form of gambling because prizes are determined through a drawing. This difference in perception raises important ethical and theological concerns. The study highlights the importance of maintaining motivations grounded in Christian love and voluntary giving, ensuring transparency in fund management, strengthening church programs across social, economic, and theological dimensions, and establishing clear guidelines for managing similar fundraising activities in accordance with Christian ethics.
