University students in emerging adulthood are vulnerable to various psychological problems due to increasingly complex academic, social, and personal demands. One form of psychological difficulty frequently experienced is psychological helplessness, which may manifest through feelings of worthlessness and catastrophizing tendencies. Feelings of worthlessness emerge when people perceive themselves as lacking value or competence, whereas catastrophizing is characterized by an excessive tendency to anticipate the worst possible outcomes of a situation. This article examines the application of Person-Centered Therapy (PCT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in assisting university students experiencing psychological helplessness. This study used a case study to analyze relevant scientific literature on psychological helplessness, self-worth, catastrophizing, PCT, and CBT. The results show that PCT is effective in helping students rebuild self-worth through an empathetic, authentic, and unconditionally accepting counseling relationship. Meanwhile, CBT is effective in helping students identify and modify maladaptive thought patterns underlying catastrophizing tendencies. These data suggest that selecting counseling approaches that fit with the specific characteristics of clients’ problems is important for helping students overcome psychological helplessness and improve their psychological well-being.
